That nose is his superpower. Nosework is where he is finally allowed to use it: a scent to find, a mission, a dog who is focused and proud of himself.

And what are scent games (hunting games)?
They are all the games that put the nose to work day to day: hunting hidden treats, finding an object, searching an area. They are the perfect way into sport detection, and a brilliant tool for keeping your dog busy and happy. Because what your dog loves most is searching.
And what is sport detection (Nosework)?
It is the playful version of what professional detection dogs do when they search for narcotics or explosives: your dog is shown which scent to hunt and shows you where it is. You don't need a “working dog”: every dog is born with the right nose. While he searches for the scent, you learn to read him. And above all, you get a foot inside your dog's head, and how it works. It is watching him search with his nose that lets you picture the scent yourself. That is the wow moment.
Where does sport detection come from?
It was born in the United States in the 2000s, created by professional detection dog trainers. Their idea: give family dogs the same job, and the same pleasure, as their four-legged colleagues.
How is this different from professional detection?
Professional detection dogs work all around us:

The brilliant part? In sport detection we can work on exactly the same thing, with one particular target scent. The teaching methods are the same, the foundations are the same. Your dog will be a pro at his scent, just like the working dogs: everyone has their mission. And you meet his need every bit as much as the working dog's is met. It is exactly the same thing.
Who is it for?
For you, if you want to work as a team with your dog and finally understand his world. You don't need to be an athlete: this works perfectly well for someone with reduced mobility. It is his nose doing the work, not your legs. No experience needed.
Which dogs is it for?
All of them. From puppies to seniors. No need for a perfectly trained dog: come exactly as you are, both of you. From a dog with a disability, high energy, sensitive, nervous or reactive, right through to the full-time sofa dog.
What your dog gets out of it
There are more studies than you can count showing that scent work calms dogs down. Every dog needs to use his nose: it is their primary instinct, the first need we owe them. Fifteen minutes of searching tires a dog as much as a long walk: the nose is a workout for the brain. Your dog gains focus, confidence, and calm at home. And the two of you gain a shared language: he searches, you read him, you find it together.
In practice, scent work ticks every box: your dog leads the search himself, at his own pace, and every find builds his confidence. Searching brings the adrenaline back down: he learns to settle himself, he sleeps better, he concentrates better. No physical condition is required: puppy, senior, dog recovering from injury, everyone plays. And the science backs it up: two weeks of scent work is enough to make dogs measurably more “optimistic” (Duranton & Horowitz), and nosework is even used by veterinary behaviourists to reduce anxiety.
A dog who channels his instincts is a calmer dog at home. No competition. Just meaning, enjoyment, and a team properly discovering each other.
How do the sessions work?
We work in a small group, four dogs maximum, with space between them. In Nosework we practise the four elements, just like the professionals: vehicle search, interior, exterior and containers.

Frequently asked questions
Does my dog need to be trained and obedient already?+
No, you are already ready. We start from wherever you are today. Puppy, slightly unhinged adolescent, reactive dog, sensitive, over the top or short on confidence: it makes no difference. The goal stays the same: locking onto the mission.
My dog has never done sport detection, can he start?+
Yes, the 5-session card is an introduction. Every dog already knows how to use his nose: we just teach him to use it with you.
Why a multi-session card rather than a trial session?+
Because a one-off class makes no sense: the first sessions lay the foundations for your dog and for you, and the results come with the progression. Every session adapts to your team, so you never waste your time. And your card is valid for 3 years.
What kit do I need?+
Nothing to buy, you almost certainly have it all at home already. A harness ideally (or a collar), and a 3 m lead.
How is this different from mantrailing?+
